23,490 Total calories burned. Thanks again to Jack Rabbit for their generous donation of a pair of running shoes to the donor with the closest guess. (The winner was Terence Gerchberg, who needs another pair of sneakers like Rosie O’Donnell needs another bite of a donut.)
18.2 Total weight (in pounds) lost during ride. This despite going through 30+ bottles of Accelerade and water.
2 Pee breaks. One each for Todd Colby and Jon Miles. Ironman apparently does not equal iron bladder.
6,931 Dollars donated as of now. Feel free to increase that sum by donating online.
Tomorrow’s the day – 8 x 100 miles to nowhere. We’re still working on a few last minute details like a sick rider and other minor glitches, but overall we’re looking good. Please come by at 10 to watch the head shaving, anytime from 11-4 to watch us ride, or join us at the after party from 6-8 at Sheep Station on 4th and Douglass. We’ll have a raffle with great prizes including great gear, massages, SCUBA lessons and lots more. Please join us.
Our eBay auction to shave my head ends Friday. Over the years my hair has gone from long and flowing to short and serious, and soon it’ll be absent. If you want to do the honors, and support Locks of Love in the process, please bid now.
In addition to generously supplying Clif Bars and Accelerade to the riders, in order to encourage reaching deep into your
pocket to support Locks of Love, JackRabbit is giving a pair of running shoes
to the donor who guesses the total number of calories burned by the riders
(minimum $25 donation, you can choose from any shoe JackRabbit carries). To
enter this special contest, email your guess to Johanna@jackrabbitsports.com no
later than midnight, Friday April 4. Make sure to include in your
email: 1) your caloric guess, 2) the name under which your donation
to Locks of Love was made (either what appears on the check, or the name on the
credit card if donating online), 3) your email and phone number in case
you win. Once again, you can donate here.
So the good news is that plans for Miles for Mom are moving along nicely. We’ve already had some very generous donations via credit card and check, plus we’ve received merchandise and services for our raffle.
The bad news is that it dawned on me that i need to get my lazy ass into shape so that i can cover the 100-miles before everyone else heads to the afterparty. Yesterday I rounded up Shane, NSQ, and Killer, as well as guest star Louie Figs for a 62-mile ride at the studio. We managed to hold a respectable 20 mph average, and more importantly got the opportunity to work on our drafting and teamwork, which I suspect will be particularly important on the day of the event. Hopefully we’ll get the other four riders in to work together this weekend.
Plans for Miles for Mom are moving along nicely. We’ve got some great items for our raffle lined up, and the auction to shave my head will open 3/25. Of course there’s also the minor technicality of getting my lazy ass in shape to ride for 5+ hours.
Most importantly, we’ve created an online site so that you can make a donation with a credit card.
We gave our boy Kevin Starkes a short break from his training for the Boston Marathon so that he could design the logo for the Miles for Mom indoor century. His nifty work is displayed here.
In the meantime, the riders are hard at work, and I’m doing my best to grow out my hair so that the highest bidder can shave it all off on April 5. We’ve also made arrangements with two local salons – Medusa and Slope Suds, who are offering complimentary cuts and stylings to anyone who donates their 10" ponytail.
Plans for Miles for Mom – the century to benefit Locks of Love
- are coming along nicely. The date is set for Saturday 4/5/08. In
addition to the ride at the studio, a local salon is offering free
stylings and cuts for anyone who donates their ponytail, and the Sheep Station will host our after-party and provide food and drink.
We’ve already secured sponsorship from Headblade and Jack Rabbit (and we welcome other cash or merchandise donations from corporate sponsors) and are now accepting individual donations
as well. Plus the highest bidder gets to shave Coach Cane’s head.
We’re also still looking for 2-3 riders who are up for the challenge.
Stay tuned to the blog and our new website – www.milesformom.com.
