Brooklyn Duathlon 2014

Brooklyn Duathlon 2014

For years we’ve opened our multisport season with the New York Triathlon Club’s Brooklyn Duathlon, and often with good results. Happily, this year was no different.

In the women’s race, last year’s top two women (Nicole Sin Quee and Jessica Purcell) were on the sidelines cheering their teammates, but we kept the victory in the family as Nicole Falcaro led from wire to wire. Cole opened with a 12:00 run for the first two miles, and when the gap had ...

Sleepy Hollow Half Race Results

Sleepy Hollow Half Race Results

Nice work this weekend by the CCMS contingent at the implausibly hilly Sleepy Hollow Half.

  • Isang Smith 1:34:14 (2nd in AG)
  • Jessica Purcell 1:41:40 (4th in AG)
  • Steven Zebrak 1:47:11

Our athletes had to deal with the usually hilly course being modified to make it even worse (or better depending on your POV), as well as also a coach who refused to taper them for the race. Well done.

Wait ’til Your Mother Hears About This

Wait ’til Your Mother Hears About This

Transferring bibs has become a pretty standard, albeit rule-breaking, procedure in big New York Road Runners races. Check out craigslist and other message boards and you’ll see bibs for sale; and there’s no doubt that friend-to-friend transfers take place on a regular basis. Generally, my attitude is that it’s NYRR’s problem rather than mine. I’m fairly confident that Mary Wittenberg isn’t carefully perusing my accounting records to make sure that no one’s ripping me off, so why should I worry ...

NYC Half Preview

NYC Half Preview

The NYRR NYC Half is something of a polarizing race. Some people grumble about the high price, overcrowding, and more of the usual complaints about big NYRR races, while many others love the race. They point to the nice expo, spectator support, the excitement of running through Times Square, blah, blah, blah. Those people are like the ones who look you in the eye and tell you they got Playboy for the articles. You know what everyone really likes about the NYC ...

Al Gordon Classic Race Results

Congratulations to Meera Joshi for whom the Al Gordon Classic  was her first race as a member of CCMS and her last in the 40-44 AG. Impressively, Meera whooped up on some of the young folk and took 3rd in the AG with a time of 29:04 (7:16/mile). Look out 45-49 AG.

Plus, Al Gordon marked the return of the always impressive Jen Heister, in her first race since the birth of her baby boy. Jen finished in 33:10.

Nice work ...

Cherry Tree 10-Miler Race Results

Nice work at last weekend’s PPTC Cherry Tree 10-miler by Jeffrey Dweck, who finished in 1:06:31, which was good for 4th in his AG, and Isang Smith who ran 1:11:12, which got 6th in her AG. Both raced far more rapidly than I posted their results, and they are to be commended for that.

Fred Lebow Manhattan Half Marathon Results

Kudos to Angela Riordan and Lester Wasserman on their strong City Coach debuts at Sunday’s Fred Lebow Manhattan Half Marathon, as they both train for the Boston Marathon.

Angela placed first in her age group, while Lester ran his fastest half in years. They’re both my favorite kind of athletes – they listen to their coach, and they make him look smarter than he really is.

Congratulations Angela and Lester.

The State of the (Fitness) World

The State of the (Fitness) World

Earlier this month, the good folks at Greatist published their list of the 100 Most Influential People in Health and Fitness. Many of the names on the list are respected fitness professionals with unquestioned ethics, and deserve all the accolades they get. Many, not all.

Let’s start at the top.

1. Dr. Mehmet Oz. Not too many years ago, I’d have been tickled to see Dr. Oz on this list. Without question he is smarter than I’ll ever be. As the ...
