A Different Cyclist vs. Pedestrian Outcome

A Different Cyclist vs. Pedestrian Outcome

Last Friday a cyclist (and friend of mine) was commuting in Queens. He was fully within the law and was not speeding, not riding recklessly, not running lights, etc. or any of the other things that “heartless speed demons” (as Andrea Peyser likes to call them) do. A pedestrian stepped out in the middle of the block from between parked cars. In an effort not to hit her, the rider hit his brakes. His front wheel locked up and he ...

Trying Something New on Race Day – an Age Group Nationals Recap

Trying Something New on Race Day – an Age Group Nationals Recap

Never try anything new on race day. You’ve heard it. You’ve practiced it. You’ve likely told other new athletes the same advice. However, I think there are exceptions to this rule. For one, you should always try a new course on race day. Your racing life will get pretty boring if you don’t. Also, you should always try for a new time and pace on race day. For obvious reasons.

I did all of the above this weekend ...

From Concept to Competition – NJ State Triathlon Recap

One year and one month ago, I emailed Coach Cane and declared my desire to do triathlon. One week and two days ago, I competed in my first Olympic distance triathlon, the NJ State Triathlon. I have a few things to show for it, besides some soreness, blisters, and a skill for drawing parallels between time passing.

I drove out Herb, my boyfriend/race photographer/personal cheerleader/gear assistant to West Windsor, NJ on Saturday afternoon to pick up my race ...

Nike Run NYC and Me

Nike Run NYC and Me

Until now I have avoided publicly commenting about the Nike Run NYC changes. And to a large extent, I want to continue to avoid sharing my opinion about the new program, as ultimately the decision to change is entirely up to Nike. They fund the free program and are entitled to do what they want with it, so in that respect, my opinion does not (and should not) matter.

A bit of history. In 2002 I was ...

Tri One On Race Takeaways

Tri One On Race Takeaways

When it has been just shy of a month since a race, the minutest of details, such as the severity of the waves, the slippery sand on the boardwalk, and the potholes on the bike course, are tougher to remember than the main takeaways. (Actually, the potholes I remember. Holy derailleur adjustment!)

I raced the Tri One On Sprint Triathlon on Sunday, June 15th. A 500m swim, 10 mile bike, and 3.0 mile run awaited me on the waters and ...
