It was like déjà vu. When Jonathan won the 100, I responded, “It never even occurred to me that you could beat me.” When he won the 400, I thought, ‘It never even occurred to me that you could beat me by that much.” While the outcome was not what I hoped for nor anticipated, the whole shebang couldn’t have been better. This Sunday I will be racing 400 meters against my husband. There is ego and a mountain bike on the line. But not really. The bike has already been purchased, and truth be told, “My money/your money” isn’t a thing for us. As far as ego, we both want to be the victor, having run a good race rather than having the other one limp off the track (but if that happens, a win is a win).

It started innocently enough. I told my lovely bride that despite her impressive athletic accomplishments and my recent bilateral hip surgeries, I thought I could outrun her for 100-meters. A few hours later, once her dismissive laughter subsided, we visited the track and confirmed my hypothesis.
